Val reflects on the weekend at Donington Park Posted on 28/06/2004 @ 13:33
After a long and eventful weekend which sadly saw another DNF for the Zwaans Racing Team Chrysler Viper N°9, Val reflects on his race weekend:

“I guess Lady-Luck wasn't on our side this time around. With a car that was right on the pace during the free practice sessions, we still weren’t in the top 3, which was a bit frustrating. This was due to Dunlop's new soft compound tires, who were about 2 tenths of a second slower then the 1 hour-old hard compound tires from a couple of races ago!

After figuring that out, we were confident that we would be in with a shout come qualifying. Then, sadly, as predicted, clouds gathered over Donington Park and sure enough it started to rain! But seeing as our car had always done well in rainy conditions, we were all quite upbeat about it. Disappointingly it wasn’t to be. The tires provided to us by Dunlop would turn out to be no match for the competition. It was very hard to find any grip at all. We did however manage to post the 6th fastest time on the lap charts during the second qualifying session.

Starting the race in 13th place and not having the best of starts, meant I didn't lose or win any places. But as the race progressed I gradually made up a couple of places and I soon found myself in 8th position.

Disaster stroke after 50 minutes. The fuel pressure alarm light came on on the dashboard and the car almost stalled! Luckily for me it happened only 2 corners before the pit-entry and I managed to get the car in. While the team bolted on new tires and filled the fuel tank up again, I handed the wheel over to Rob van der Zwaan. Amazingly he almost didn’t make it thru his out-lap! The engine kept stalling and when it did ran, it seemed to hold back. After a couple of laps the problem disappeared and Rob could push forward again after having dropped to 24th overall. He eventually climbed back up to 13th, but in his fight to get back into the top 10 he hit a TVR, the front of the car sustained some serious damage and it was all over for the N° 9 Chrysler Viper GTS-R.”

The team now goes back to Holland where the two cars will be rebuild and prepared for the next round of the FIA GT Championship, the Proximus 24 Hours of Spa!
