A tough weekend for Val at Spa |
Posted on 05/08/2004 @ 22:19
|
What was supposed to be the highpoint of the season for Val, turned out to be one of the toughest weekends of his carreer. Disaster struck early in the weekend as Rob Van der Zwaan shot off the track at Stavelot and hit the armco at 200 Km/h. The car was seriously damaged at the front (bodywork, suspension, airbox...) but luckily the driver escaped unscathed. Because of the damage, the car had to be rebuild and thus missed the free practice sessions and first qualifying. However after a fantastic job by the mechanics, the car was ready for the second qualifying session. After only two laps disaster struck again as the engine cover came loose and flew off the car! The team worked hard through the night to get the car prepared for final qualifying and the N° 9 Chrysler Viper GTS-R eventually claimed the 21 position on the grid.
Come raceday everything seemed to be heading in the right direction for Val and his team. Val’s teammate Henrik Roos took the wheel during the morning warm-up session and managed to put in some consistent laps. Things were finally looking good for the race. It wasn’t to be however. When the entire field started their warm-up lap, one car was left standing on its grid position. It was the N°9 Chrysler Viper of Val Hillebrand. An unknown electrical problem prevented Val from taking the start of the race. The car was pushed down the hill and placed just outside the pitlane exit. While the entire field raced by, Val tried anxiously to get the car started. There was only one way to have a chance at competing and that was to get the car back into the pitlane. Seeing as the car was technically “on the track”, he could not receive any help from his mechanics. Val therefore had to push the Chrysler Viper, weighing about 1200 kgs, uphill. A daunting task, but while being cheered on by the entire grandstand and pulling two arm-muscles in the process, Val succeeded!
As soon as Val got the car back into the pits, the mechanics got to work. For 4 long hours they worked hard trying to find the problem that prevented the N°9 car from participating in this wonderful 24 hour race. Eventually the team decided to pull the car out of the race.
For Val this was the end of a weekend he had been looking forward to. “It is really a shame that we couldn’t show our real potential here this weekend. Our second car ran consistently in the top 5 and was running in third position in GT before it retired at 10 o’ clock in the morning with an engine problem. Together with the team we are now examining the possibility of participating in the Zolder 24 Hours in 3 weeks time.”
